Two programs this Friday, March 27th, have been designated as Lawyers & Leaders events.

At 11:30 a.m. in 245 BLB, Ellen Krug, an Iowa trial attorney, will present on her experience in transitioning genders. Krug, who owned and managed a law firm in Cedar Rapids and then North Liberty, transitioned from male to female in 2009. Two months later, she tried and won a jury case in Cedar Rapids. Krug's presentation, "Gray Area Thinking: Understanding Diverse Humans," will include reflections on lessons learned during her "gender journey." Audience members will gain tools for interacting with others who differ from themselves. Ellie's story is told in "Getting to Ellen: A Memoir about Love, Honesty and Gender Change," and has been featured on Iowa Public Radio, Minnesota Public Radio and numerous publications. The talk is sponsored by the Career Services Office.

Following Krug's presentation, OWLSS will host the Belle Babb Mansfield Women in Law Conference from 1:00 to 3:30 p.m. in 235 BLB, featuring the Katherine Finn Milleman Memorial Lecture. Keynoting the presentation is Molly O'Meara Schnell. A panel discussion will follow the keynote, including Professor Caroline Sheerin, Chris Luzzie, Rachel Zimmerman Smith, Megan Thiel, and Ellen Krug. Pizza will be served, and a dessert and networking reception will follow.

Attendance at one Lawyers & Leaders program each semester is one requirement for membership in the Pro Bono Society. For more information, contact the Citizen Lawyer Program in 182 BLB or e-mail law-clp@uiowa.edu.
