Lawyers & Leaders programs complement the traditional legal curriculum, and attendance at one of these events each semester is one requirement of the Pro Bono Society for that semester. The Fall 2021 Lawyers & Leaders attendance requirement can be satisfied by attending one of the programs listed below and completing this attendance form. Additional opportunities will be added later this semester.

Wednesday, Sept. 22, 12:00 p.m. – Iowa in the World Community: The Right to Housing

Iowa in the World Community: The Right to Housing is a virtual panel that centers on international law's recognition of adequate housing as a fundamental right. The panel will discuss how adequate housing can be recognized as a fundamental human right in Iowa and will explore barriers to housing access and security. Friday, Oct. 8, 3:00 p.m.  – BLSA Roundtable Event with Ashley Stewart, Assistant Appellate Defender

Join the Black Law Students Association as they host Ashley Stewart, Assistant Appellate Defender at the Iowa Public Defender's Office, for a Roundtable event in the 4th Floor Student Lounge. Prior to the Roundtable, Ms. Stewart will be representing an Appellant at Iowa Law's Supreme Court Day at 1:30 p.m. As a note, Ms. Stewart is the first Black woman to argue before the Iowa Supreme Court. 

Friday, Oct. 29, 12:40 p.m.  via Zoom – Pro Bono Celebration with Remarks by Alumni Adrian Haughton ('18) 

Join the Citizen Lawyer Program's Zoom Pro Bono Celebration where Adrian Haughton (’18) will deliver remarks on the role of lawyers in society and the importance of public service. The Citizen Lawyer Program will also recognize our current Pro Bono Society members. The Zoom link will be posted closer to the event date. Fun fact: Pro Bono Week is not only celebrated at Iowa Law; it is a national celebration. This year, the American Bar Association (ABA)’s 2021 National Pro Bono Week Celebration runs from Oct. 24-30, 2021. 

Wednesday, Nov. 10, 12:45 p.m. in 225 BLB  – OWLSS Salary Negotiation Panel

Join the Organization for Women Law Students & Staff (OWLSS) for their annual Salary Negotiation Panel. The panelists will discuss their salary negotiation experiences and will give tips and strategies to successfully negotiate salaries with employers.
