The Lawyers & Leaders series offers programs to complement the traditional legal curriculum with workshops, lectures, and other programs that focus on pro bono traditions, leadership development, practical lawyer and life skills, and community issues. Attendance at one program each semester is one requirement of the Pro Bono Society.

Civility Matters. Iowa Board of Trial Advocates members will facilitate this educational and entertaining program aimed at increasing civility and courtesy in the legal profession.

 

Friday, October 5, 12:40-1:40pm (285 BLB)

Using Your Law Degree to Meddle in Non-profits and Municipalities. Joel Greer (’78), will share his experiences as president or chair of 22 non-profit corporations, VP of three, secretary of four, and mayor of Marshalltown, Iowa, which suffered significant damage from an EF3 tornado in June 2018.

Pro Bono Celebration. A special guest will deliver remarks on the role of lawyers in society and the importance of service. We will also recognize Pro Bono Society members and announcement of highest rate of participation in the First Year Service Challenge. Reception to follow.

 

Thursday, November 1, 6:00 pm (Levitt Auditorium)

Reforming Juvenile Justice in Iowa. Speakers will have a discussion about the juvenile justice system of Iowa. Speakers include Erin Altheide of Juvenile Court Services, Rachel Antonuccio of the State Public Defender's Office, LaTasha DeLoach of State of Iowa DMC Committee, and Jeree Thomas of the Campaign for Youth Justice.

Making the Record. A seasoned court reporter will discuss, from an experienced observer's point of view, how attorneys can favorably present his or herself and make the most complete, clear, and concise record from pretrial deposition to final trial transcript.
